Leader in user virtualization achieves 60% increase in global revenue
New York, NY - August 26, 2010 - AppSense, the leading provider of user virtualization solutions, today announced it has achieved record revenue for the fiscal year 2010 which closed June 30, 2010. The company experienced a 60 percent growth in global revenue and more than doubled its US revenue over the previous financial year. AppSense attributes its momentum to the growing need for user virtualization technology on both physical and virtual desktops.
With new offices in New York City and San Jose, California, the company also increased its workforce by 34 percent globally, going from 168 to 225 employees. Over the next year AppSense plans to enlarge its employee base by 40 percent, growing to approximately 315 employees by the end of the fiscal year 2011. Many of the new employees have been recruited as consultants and trainers in the new AppSense professional services division. This division provides training and accreditation services to AppSense’s business partners, as well as supporting partners and customers through a global team of consultants.
"The growth we have experienced over the past year has been phenomenal and we show no signs of slowing down," said Darron Antill, COO of AppSense. "The number of new customers making the clear business decision to use AppSense, and existing customers expanding their use of our solutions, is solid proof that user virtualization is an essential technology for any mid- to large-sized desktop deployment, whether it be physical, virtual or in the cloud. User virtualization is fast becoming an independent category in the desktop space and we look forward to further solidifying our place as the leader in the user virtualization market in the years to come."
AppSense also experienced a record year with its channel partners, helping them provide integrated solutions to their customers with a 120 percent increase in the number of partners completing their education program.
"AppSense is dedicated to the channel and continues to develop its channel program so that it delivers its partners with the skills necessary to be successful," said Pete Rawlinson, head of marketing at AppSense. "We hope to increase the number of senior consultants in the channel by a further 200 percent in the next year, and will continue to provide our existing and future partners with comprehensive education, support and training for our innovative user virtualization technology."
Additionally, AppSense was named the Citrix Ready Solution Partner of the Year, received a five-star rating by Everything Channel in the 2010 Partner Program Guide and joined the Microsoft System Center Alliance. Over the past year, AppSense has been recognized with a number of industry awards including Best Desktop Virtualization Solution in the Best of VMworld awards, Desktop Software Product of the Year at the Techworld Awards, and the Silver award in the Desktop Virtualization category for the SearchServerVirtualization.com 2009 Product of the Year Awards.

Resolve Windows 7 Compatibility Concerns
16 July 2010
Although home users are adopting Win7, enterprises are moving a bit slower. And that should come as no surprise: It is a long process to prepare any enterprise for an OS migration because numerous issues must be resolved prior to rolling out the new install. "An important issue is the fact that Win7 uses a structurally different user profile than WinXP, so administrators need to fully understand this difference before stepping into the migration", says Simon Rust, vice president of technology at AppSense. Virtualization is a Good Business Decision, but Hosting in the Cloud Could be Even Better

The downsides for this approach include the need to use open licensing, the need to have a hardware Storage Area Network (SAN) for reliability, the need for software to control user settings (an example of this would be a product like AppSense), and the biggest objection of all, having laptop users remember to disconnect properly. ComputerWorld: Taming the laptop.
01 June 2010
Laptops have always been a challenge to manage, and, frankly, not a lot has changed to address this in recent years. Last week Citrix announced that their client hypervisor, XenClient, was available for trial download. There have been ways to run virtual images on client devices before, but they have been based on so-called Type-2 hypervisors where virtual machines run on top of a full copy of a client operating system. The significance of the Citrix announcement is that it is the first Type-1 hypervisor from a major vendor. Click here

New York, NY – May 7, 2010 – AppSense (www.appsense.com), the leading provider of user virtualization solutions, today announced that it will showcase how its user virtualization technology easily integrates with Citrix XenDesktop® and Microsoft System Center® technologies in both cloud computing and iPad environments at Citrix Synergy 2010, taking place May 12-14, 2010 at Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco. In addition, Martin Ingram, the company’s vice president of strategy, will be presenting "The Virtualized User Infrastructure" in the Geek Speakeasy Area located in the Solutions Expo Hall on Tuesday, May 11 at 9 p.m.
At the show, AppSense will demonstrate dynamic personalization of desktops and applications delivered using Citrix XenDesktop and Microsoft App-V to physical PCs, thin clients and iPads at their booth #304. The 'Personality Cloud' demo will use Citrix XenDesktop to provide a virtual desktop accessed via a thin client device. This desktop includes applications provided using both Citrix XenApp and Microsoft App-V technologies. AppSense user virtualization technology will dynamically configure and personalize the desktop, including the App-V and XenApp provisioned applications, all from a cloud-based service using their Virtualized User Infrastructure technology.
AppSense will also demonstrate how AppSense user virtualization technology enables the persistence of a user's personality from a locally installed desktop PC to an iPad running XenDesktop via Citrix Receiver.
"We are beginning to use iPads and are rolling out AppSense's user virtualization technology with them," said Nick Volosin, ISS director of technical services at Kaweah Delta Health Care District. "AppSense was easy to deploy on the iPads and AppSense technology is helping us effectively manage the user environment and dramatically save on IT management costs."
"The technology and user requirements for desktops are rapidly evolving - cloud computing and iPads are just recent examples of new ways enterprises are delivering desktops to meet user need," said Peter Rawlinson, vice president of marketing at AppSense. "Our user virtualization technology can be used in any desktop environment regardless of delivery method in order to provide users with a consistent and personalized user environment whether they are using local PC, off-line laptops, the cloud or even an iPad."
Synergy 2010 is focused on exploring the convergence between virtualization, networking and cloud computing and how these technologies can solve real business problems. For more information about the conference, visit www.citrixsynergy.com.

For a number of reasons this article had to be called ‘The Aliens Have Landed;’ firstly because we are beginning to see the deployment of larger virtual desktop implementations and similar to the arrival of aliens, there is always a concern that this technology really will help... I was watching the 1953 film ‘War of the Worlds’ recently and noticed how the aliens moved across the country, starting in one place and forming patterns based on that first point. This reminded me of patterns I have recently seen in the adoption of desktop virtualization. Click here

ChannelSense Recognized as Exceptional by Leading Channel Authority
New York, NY, March 29, 2010 – AppSense, a leading provider of user virtualization solutions for enterprises, today announced it has been recognized by Everything Channel as one of North America’s top information technology (IT) vendors for its ChannelSense program. Additionally, ChannelSense was recognized with a five-star rating representative of an exceptional program.
AppSense partner program was awarded a Five-Star recognition in the small companies category in Everything Channel's 16th annual 2010 Partner Program Guide (PPG), acknowledging its commitment and strength of its programs for reseller partners, which include IT integrators, technology solution providers and consultants.
The AppSense ChannelSense program provides the company's VARs with comprehensive resources for education, marketing and technical support, as well as enhanced marketing and sales tools such as the ChannelSense ROI Analyzer. This accurate ROI tool helps partners determine how much customers can save by using AppSense solutions, and at what point their initial investment pays for itself. Using this tool, customers typically find that AppSense Environment Manager pays for itself within a few months.
AppSense Environment Manager is an infrastructure solution that manages the entire user environment for thousands of users in enterprise organizations. The technology effectively decouples the user from the desktop, enabling desktop and applications to be standardized and delivered using any combination of delivery mechanism (virtual desktop, physical PC, Terminal Services, application streaming, etc.), whilst ensuring a personal, flexible and seamless user experience.
Research for the 2010 Everything Channel Partner Program Guide and the Five-Star Partner Program rating was conducted by Everything Channel's research department. Everything Channel analyzed 130 vendor programs rating vendors' responses to in-depth questions about their partner programs in the five elements of sales support, partner profitability, partner ecosystem development/management, partner communication/marketing, and demand generation. To ensure fair comparisons, companies were placed in one of four categories based on company size (Enterprise, Midsize, Small and Emerging). Questions from each section were scored individually and weighted appropriately. The Five-Star Partner Program rating recognizes the elite subset of Partner Program Guide vendors who give solution providers the best partnering elements in their channel programs. The Five-star rating is bestowed on programs whose overall rating is among the elite based on company size.
"We are pleased to deliver to the Channel an exclusive list of the leading vendor channel programs with details about key technologies, program opportunities, and information on the hottest new program offerings," said Kelley Damore, VP, Editorial Director, Everything Channel. "The quality of a technology vendor's partner program determines how profitable its partners will be. For their commitment to their business partners and their efforts to build quality programs, we congratulate those recognized as this year’s Five-Star Partner Program winners for helping to drive greater revenue in the channel."
"AppSense is dedicated to helping our partners be as successful as possible, and this means supplying them with the best, most comprehensive resources in education, marketing and technical support," said Nigel Wilson, head of channel at AppSense. "We are pleased to be recognized with a Five-Star partner rating by Everything Channel, and will continue to focus on providing resources to our partners that enable them to effectively and successfully sell our user virtualization technology to their customers in a way that quickly shows the end-user the value and savings that can be found by effectively managing the desktop environment."
The PPG list and those companies recognized as five-star will appear in the March 29 issue of CRN magazine and online at www.Channelweb.com.

Desktop virtualisation explodes
25 February 2010
"One major factor impacting the success of both server and client hosted desktop virtualisation is the method by which the experience of the user is addressed. Regardless of how you deliver and manage the corporate desktop, any degradation to the working experience of the user will result in serious problems in the rollout of that technology. By managing the 'user personality' independent of the desktop, the user’s experience (and therefore the adoption of the desktop) can be ensured." Sean Walsh, GM ANZ, AppSense. Click here for more

New York, NY – February 11, 2010 – AppSense, the leading provider of user virtualization solutions for the enterprise, today announced record US revenue growth in 2009, including a substantial increase in the number of desktop virtualization product licenses sold during the year.
In 2009, AppSense sold 170,000 licenses of its user virtualization software for virtual desktops, representing close to 20 percent of all virtual desktops sold globally, and over 60 percent of all componentized virtual desktop seats sold. This resulted in a 45 percent increase in AppSense US revenue last year. AppSense products are used in a wide-range of industries, and 2009 growth showed specific traction in financial services, healthcare, higher education and public sector.
Within the last year, AppSense has also dramatically increased its presence in the US, opening a headquarters in New York City and technology center in Palo Alto, California. The addition of these new offices has increased the company’s US employee base by 50 percent.
"AppSense is continuing to build on the tremendous success we experienced this past year, and is focused on increasing our resources in the US and globally to invest in the future of the company and technology," said Charles Sharland, CEO at AppSense. "User virtualization is now firmly established as being essential to the adoption of virtual desktops within the enterprise. As the clear leader in this space, our goal is to continue to deliver award-winning technology and support that provides maximum value to our customers and partners around the world."
AppSense user virtualization technology enables corporate desktops to be personalized without the need for cumbersome profiles or scripts. "We see 2010 as being a transformative year for the desktop," said Martin Ingram, VP Strategy at AppSense. "We are seeing an increasing number of our customers moving towards a component-based desktop. With this comes the need to independently manage the user aspect of the desktop. That is user virtualization."
In addition to record growth, AppSense was also honored with a number of industry awards including Best Desktop Virtualization Solution in the Best of VMworld awards, Desktop Software Product of the Year at the Techworld Awards, and the Silver award in the Desktop Virtualization category for the SearchServerVirtualization.com 2009 Product of the Year Awards.
What Customers are Saying about AppSense
Greg Matuskovic, IT director for EMB America: "In order to achieve user acceptance of the move to VDI, we needed to make sure the virtual environment looked just like a physical desktop - just without the performance issues. The AppSense solution actually performed better than we ever imagined. Crucially, AppSense Environment Manager does what roaming profiles could not achieve. It allows our consultants to work on multiple machines using one profile without impacting stability. We now run AppSense on all our virtual machines."
Andy Fisher, manager of technical services at University of Texas Medical Branch: "The decision to implement AppSense was very easy for us. From a product perspective we felt that the interface was easy to administer, intuitive, and well designed. We were also impressed by the way the AppSense team whole-heartedly backed their product and we were very pleased with the level of pre-sales service AppSense provided. The team responded to our technical issues accurately, assessed our environment thoroughly and provided demonstrations and face-to-face assistance at all times."

Virtualisation to dominate enterprise IT savings by 2014
08 February 2010
FEBRUARY 8, 2010: Virtualisation investment plans and resulting savings will rise significantly between 2010 and 2014, according to a study of more than 700 CIOs worldwide. The Citrix Virtualisation Index, independently commissioned research, provides a snapshot of how large enterprises view virtualisation.
Citrix Virtualisation Index reveals 27 per cent of IT budget to be saved through virtualisation by 2014
Server and desktop virtualisation rollouts dominate CIO plans
FEBRUARY 8, 2010: Virtualisation investment plans and resulting savings will rise significantly between 2010 and 2014, according to a study of more than 700 CIOs worldwide. The Citrix Virtualisation Index, independently commissioned research, provides a snapshot of how large enterprises view virtualisation.
The report shows that CIOs estimate virtualisation is helping to achieve cost-savings of 16 per cent for the organisation. They expect this to increase to nearly a third (27 per cent) in 2014.
31 per cent of CIOs said between 0-5 per cent of their current IT budget is dedicated to virtualisation technologies. In 2014, the largest proportion of respondents (26 per cent) predicted these technologies would make up a quarter of investment.
The study reveals a CIO focus on creating and delivering an efficient and flexible IT infrastructure over the next four years, acknowledging the need for investment in new technology.
Over the next twelve months 41 per cent of UK companies intend to extend their current use of server virtualisation and almost a third of UK CIOs (27 per cent) will be rolling out desktop virtualisation. In comparison to other countries surveyed, the UK is leading the way in server virtualisation take up, with figures for the US, Germany and Japan at 17%, 13% and 19% respectively.
Significantly, a further 36 per cent of organisations are "evaluating" or "trialling" desktop virtualisation. For server virtualisation this figure sits at 28 per cent.
Only 12 per cent of companies do not yet have some level of virtualisation deployment underway. Nearly two thirds (62.5 per cent) of these companies intend to begin server virtualisation projects in the next 18 months, while a third (33.4 per cent) intend to explore desktop virtualisation in the same time scale.
Although desktop virtualisation is the newer technology, global CIOs recognise the benefits of using it within their organisation. The six most important benefits of desktop virtualisation identified by the Index are:
- Fast desktop deployment (65 per cent)
- Use in any location on any device (64 per cent)
- Data security and access control (62 per cent)
- Reduced total cost of ownership (55 per cent)
- Ease of migration (48 per cent)
- Power savings and/or green computing (35 per cent)
James Stevenson, area vice-president for UK and Ireland at Citrix commented: "Virtualisation is a major force for change, and our findings demonstrate the value the technology can deliver to tomorrow’s enterprise, both in terms of cost and efficiency."
"It’s positive to see the server virtualisation market, although not new, is still up for grabs, with over 60 per cent of businesses looking to implement solutions over the next 18 months.
"In the main however, 2010 is set to be the year of desktop virtualisation - the tipping point when CIOs move beyond trials to adopt the technology as part of their organisation wide IT strategy."
"It will be interesting to see how attitudes and outlooks have developed when the Index is re-run in six months time. I expect to see even further plans put in place around virtualisation solutions and, as time develops, the allying of any residual fears associated with the technology."
Pierre Hall, solutions director, at IT services and solutions provider, Computacenter said: "Cost savings will definitely be one of the main drivers for virtualisation deployments over the coming years, but organisations must ensure they deploy end-to-end virtualisation solutions that will not only update legacy systems, but also reduce TCO and enable rapid ROI.
"In terms of take up, in particular we are seeing many of the desktop virtualisation pilots that were implemented last year moving into full-scale production. Over the next six months we expect to see a substantial increase in the number of virtual desktops as customers realise there are tangible savings to be made from this technology platform, particularly around flexibility and data assurance," concluded Hall.
Martin Ingram, VP of strategy, at user environment management vendor AppSense, a Citrix Platinum partner, said; "The survey results confirm what we are seeing in the market. AppSense software has been used in many of the early desktop virtualisation trials and we now see substantial momentum building in both customer organisations and systems integrators. Many organisations are using their Windows 7 migration to rethink how they deliver desktops to users and hence embracing desktop virtualisation. By choosing to use desktop virtualisation in their migration strategies organisations can simplify both this and future migrations.
"The days when desktop virtualisation was a technical curiosity are now behind us, the technology is mature and organisations understand the benefits. We see significant momentum to broad deployments of fully personalised virtual desktops," concluded Ingram.
The Citrix Virtualisation Index is an independently conducted survey of 700 CIOs from organisations with more than 500 employees across Canada, Germany, Japan, UK and USA.

One of the biggest complaints from users about virtual desktops is the lack of personalization,! according to SearchServerVirtualization.com 2009 Products of the Year judges.
